Swimming is a life skill as well as great exercise and a challenging sport.
We offer swim lessons for all ages, family swim, competitive swimming plus adaptive swim programs for kids with special needs. Our qualified swim instructors are certified in CPR, AED and First Aid.
The Y’s new swim lesson progression curriculum is designed to help participants reach their goals and provide a clear progression track.
Benefits of this approach include:
- Accommodating students of varying abilities and ages
- Fostering a sense of achievement and self-confidence
- Staying grounded in a skill continuum that allows students to move easily from one stage to the next with clearly defined stages of progress along the way. See detailed information on the new skills taught in each of the stages >>
- Encouraging students to have fun and develop new friendships through group activities
- Improving communication about student’s progress
Students can register for one of eight stages under our three swim categories depending upon their age and current swim ability:
Group Swim Lessons
When you learn to swim, you gain confidence, acquire safety /rescue skills and experience water activities you can enjoy for a lifetime. Throughout all stages, we teach students how to be safer and more comfortable in the water.
Accompanied by a parent, infants and toddlers learn to be comfortable in the water and develop swim readiness skills through fun and confidence-building experiences, while parents learn about water safety, drowning prevention and the importance of supervision.
Students learn personal water safety and achieve basic swimming competency by learning two benchmark skills:
- Swim, float, swim - sequencing front glide, roll, back float, roll, front glide and exit
- Jump, push, turn, grab
Having mastered the fundamentals, students learn additional water safety skills that prevent chronic disease, increase social-emotional and cognitive well-being, and foster a lifetime of physical activity.
Private Swim Lessons
Whether you are interested in getting comfortable in the water for the first time, want to improve your form or swim faster, we can develop a program to suit your needs.
Semi-private lessons are great for couples or friends who want to learn to swim together. Private lessons are perfect for those who prefer one-on-one attention. An instructor will work with you to determine the best path to help you achieve your personal goals.
A great way for kids and teens to make friends, have fun and enjoy a little bit of friendly competition.
We introduce younger swimmers to the team environment and teach all four competitive strokes while more experienced swimmers develop their technique and endurance level. All swimmers develop the values of goal-setting, teamwork, good sportsmanship and hard work.
Swimmers must be able to swim the length of the pool comfortably.
Mini Marlins is a pre-swim team program designed for youth 4-7 years of age who are interested in swimming on the swim team but need to work on their swim skills and endurance.
Y Swim Team - a competitive swim program operated as a satellite to RAC (Rowan Aquatic Center) coached by a professional swim coach on all levels.
Safety and Certifications
The Y was the first organization to establish certification programs for lifesaving, swimming and aquatic instruction.
It's a tradition we're proud to continue today. From community programs to lifeguard training to swim lessons, the YMCA teaches and promotes water safety one lap at a time. We empower people like you to anticipate and prevent problems before they occur and take action to help those in danger.
